At Passport + Purpose, we believe that travel isn’t just about where you go, it’s about why you go. This Juneteenth, we reflect on freedom, heritage, and the power of travel to connect us to our roots, amplify our stories, and shape a more just and intentional world.
What Is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth, celebrated every June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s a day of both celebration and solemn remembrance. It’s a moment to honor our ancestors’ resilience and to acknowledge how far we’ve come, while recognizing how much further we still have to go.
Traveling With Purpose on Juneteenth
As travelers of color, our journeys carry legacy. Each time we move through the world, we bring the stories of those who paved the way. Juneteenth is a powerful time to reflect on that legacy and ask:
How does my freedom show up in the way I explore the world?
How can I honor Black history through the places I visit?
How can I support and uplift Black-owned businesses and cultural heritage sites?
Whether you’re visiting historic sites like the National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington D.C., exploring the vibrant streets of New Orleans, or seeking out diasporic connections abroad in places like Ghana or Brazil, travel becomes an act of remembrance and celebration.
Ways to Honor Juneteenth Through Travel
Visit Black history landmarks — From Selma to Charleston, the U.S. is filled with places that preserve and tell our stories.
Support Black-owned hotels, restaurants, and tour companies — Your travel dollars are powerful tools for equity.
Document your reflections — Share what Juneteenth means to you as a traveler. Use your voice to educate and inspire others.
Practice intentional travel — Choose destinations and experiences that align with your values of freedom, justice, and joy.
Final Thought: Freedom Looks Like This
Freedom looks like boarding a plane with your passport and purpose in hand. It looks like exploring new lands with pride, confidence, and curiosity. It looks like honoring your history while building your legacy.
This Juneteenth, we celebrate not just the freedom of the past, but the freedom to move, to grow, and to take up space in every corner of the world.
Travel boldly. Travel intentionally. And never forget who you are or where you come from.
Safe Travels!
